You’re invited to join Northeast Ohio’s largest book club.
One Community Reads is designed to broaden and deepen our appreciation of reading and compel friends, families, and neighbors to share their experience while reading the same book. The project is further intended to engage the community in dialogue on one of America’s most devastating problems - homelessness.
One Community Reads is a collaboration among The City Club of Cleveland, Playhouse Square and all nine local public library systems to create a shared reading experience for the Greater Cleveland community. This year’s selection, the Pulitzer Prize-winning Invisible Child: Poverty, Survival & Hope in an American City by Andrea Elliott, dives deep into the story of Dasani, a child experiencing homelessness in New York City. Taking place over the course of eight years, we follow Dasani and her siblings as they battle hunger, parental drug addiction, violence, housing instability, segregated schools, and the constant monitoring of the child-protection system.
One Community Reads programming will include book discussions and community events about the topics Dasani and her family encounters in the book – and how we might come together as a community to address the pressing issues facing the unhoused in our community. One Community Reads will include a forum with Andrea Elliott on March 6, 2023, in the Mimi Ohio Theatre at Playhouse Square.
